United Kingdom
Ofcom has enforced "highly effective" age assurance under the Online Safety Act since 25 July 2025. Traffic to compliant sites dropped sharply — Pornhub reported a 77% fall in UK visits — while by June 2026, 64 of the 100 most-visited adult services had age checks in place and 10 had geo-blocked UK users. United States
More than 25 states now require age verification for adult sites. The Supreme Court upheld the Texas law in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton on 27 June 2025, clearing the way for more. AVPA-2026
European Union
The Commission opened Digital Services Act proceedings against Pornhub, Stripchat, XNXX and XVideos in May 2025 and issued preliminary non-compliance findings in March 2026; fines can reach 6% of global turnover. An EU-wide age-verification app is in development. EC-2026
What it means for search
Traffic concentrates on sites that stay accessible and compliant. Brand search becomes the primary front door. Site architecture has to survive an age gate: a crawlable public layer, correct handling of gated content, structured data that still describes what sits behind the gate.
